The Search for a Therapist When a client embarks upon the journey of searching for a therapist, confusion is often the first emotion that they encounter. Lost in a sea of differing techniques and approaches, many clients aren't sure what they are looking for, or how to evaluate the suitability of potential therapists. Consumers are rarely taught how to filter through all the jargon and information, let alone discern the clinician that would best meet their needs. One piece of advice that simplifies this evaluation process is a fact upon which most schools of therapy tend to agree: the most important part of therapy is the client-therapist relationship. Research has shown that feeling safe and connected with your therapist, experiencing the sense that your therapist "gets" you, is more important for client progress than any technique used by the therapist. It is the quality of that relationship which allows a client to face past fears and family-of-origin issues and progress into new territory of serenity and empowerment, to walk out across the highwire of the psyche and arrive safely on the other side. |
